This is going to be a special post ❤
Are you a vegan bride? looking for that perfect wedding saree? Or you have got a special occasion to attend and looking for that gorgeous saree? Going on a trip to India and want to buy your own beautiful silk saree? But most of all you are a vegan 🙂 Well whatever your reason is, don’t give up yet! We vegan girls have the silk but not so silk option. They are cruelty free, vegan and no living being had to die in their making.
I had my wedding on December 2016. Being a native from south India, I had to wear silk saree for all the ceremonies and occasion. This is something we can’t boycott or dust off. It’s the culture and south Indian tradition. Also a wish and happiness to all the brides to get the perfect silk saree on their wedding day.
But being vegan the idea of silk disgusted me and made my skin crawl. Most of us don’t know how silk is made, the unnecessary and cruel way of extracting silk involves killing the silk worms in their pupa stage. They are thrown into hot boiling water and killed alive. In no way I’m going to support that. That’s when i asked my friends for help, and got some research done. Then i came across the Artificial silk saree.
Also called as art silk, they are mimic silk material but are plant sourced. The following will give you more details.
Now that you know the material, let’s go shopping!
Where can you get them? They are actually very easy to get your hands on and very inexpensive. My engagement saree was from flipkart 🙂 , online shopping website. It costed me only 5000 INR. When i wore on the day, i got so many compliments! Everybody wanted to get one for themselves. They started enquiring where i got it. They were shocked that it was only 5k? and they were like ” oh wow i thought it was around 10-20k, it looks very expensive” . So many raise eyebrows 🙂 Here is a sneak peak.
I believe it is still available there to buy. They are available in all Indian online shopping sites like jabong, myntra etc. It’s that easy to get one. Not a big online shopper huh? Bear with me I’m not done yet.
My next big day was my wedding day, i decided to go to the humungous clothing store in my city Pothys. They have all types of art silk sarees. Which is segregated based on the price range. So it is easy for you to choose from your budget. Here are the three finalist silk sarees i choose, the winner was the peacock blue! Although the red saree had my heart ❤ 🙂 i already choose a maroon color for my engagement. I wanted a different color so went with the blue one.
The price range of these were around 15k INR. That is a lot cheaper compared to the same price of an original silk saree design. They look expensive, look silk alike and feel the same. Great quality but without the cruelty part.
Here are some more designs and colors to choose from. How beautiful are the shine, the detailed designs, color combinations and patterns.
I know! there are beautiful aren’t they? This is just few of many pieces. My point being you don’t have to give up on anything on a vegan lifestyle. You get to enjoy your tradition, culture and happiness in more ethical way. Here are few more open pieces to admire at.
Now that you have your perfect wear for your special day. The other question is how do i convince my family?
My personal experience, I come from a veg/non-veg family. I told them clearly i would not wear a real silk, since they are made in the cruel way. I would rather wear artificial material that would look and resemble a silk saree. You won’t even know the difference and most of all that is going to be easy on your pocket. My parents were skeptical at first, but then on the moment they got to see the various designs and color that looks silk alike and expensive but was cheaper, it got them convinced.
No one would force you to wear something you wouldn’t like. All you have to do is be patient explain them politely and show them the options! Anyone would be happy to agree. In some of the customs, the groom’s side is the one who presents the bride with the wedding saree. If that is the case with you, you could request the groom you would like to choose the saree and they could just pay for it. Seeing you take something not so expensive yet elegant, would give a big space in the groom’s heart 😉 . Or offer them to choose from art silk material and let them surprise you 🙂 . There is always an option.
I hope my story and experience helped you. Please share and let other know too.
Having said all this, the rayon industry play their part in the environmental damage, it would always be best to invest only on need to buy basis and not using them at all is even more awesome 🙂
